Magnatech D-Head Orbital Weldhead

The Magnatech D-Head orbital weldhead supports multi-pass GTAW pipe-to-pipe and pipe-to-fitting welding with torch rotation, filler-wire feed, arc-gap control and oscillation. Interchangeable guide rings and spool options help adapt the head to restricted-access applications.

D-Head orbital welding with filler wire

The Magnatech D-Head orbital weldhead automates torch travel, filler-wire delivery, arc-gap control and oscillation for multi-pass pipe welding. It is used in pipe fabrication, power generation and process-plant construction or maintenance where the joint design and welding procedure call for controlled GTAW passes.

Guide rings, pipe OD and working clearance

Select guide rings by the actual outside diameter. Nominal pipe size and tube OD are different measurements: for example, 1½ in nominal pipe has a 1.900 in (48.26 mm) OD. Confirm the ring, chain/link kit and any insert requirements for the workpiece.

The existing configuration listed below covers approximately 1–14 in. Current D-Head 420 information extends the range down to 0.84 in (21.34 mm) OD using appropriate guide-ring inserts. Confirm the configuration of an existing head before ordering tooling for the smaller diameters.

Radial clearance depends on spool configuration and workpiece diameter. Below 1.75 in (44.45 mm) OD, the required clearance increases as diameter decreases. Provide the actual space around and beside the joint for a clearance review.

Controls, cooling and tooling

The D-Head is used with compatible Pipemaster 515 or 516 systems. Confirm the complete controller, power-source, cooling and cable arrangement for the supplied head. Wire size capability depends on the fitted wire kit; the table retains the existing listed sizes, while additional tooling may be available for the current D-Head 420.

Accessory enquiries include low-profile spool kits, guide-ring adaptors, tilt arc-voltage-control arrangements for suitable socket or fillet welds, and video arc monitoring. For preheated pipe, request the applicable temperature and mounting requirements for the exact assembly.
