Welding Pit Depth Gauge — GAL
The GAL CAT 5A welding pit depth gauge measures accessible pits and undercuts up to 1/2 in (12.7 mm). Its extended pointer also supports surface-porosity comparison and outside-misalignment checks.
Pit and undercut depth measurement
The all-stainless-steel CAT 5A is a handheld gauge for checking surface pits and weld undercut in fabrication, inspection and maintenance. Its extended pointer reaches the bottom of a 1/8 in diameter by 1/2 in deep hole where the opening and access allow proper seating.
CAT 5A specifications
| Pit and undercut range | Up to 1/2 in (12.7 mm) |
|---|---|
| Published inch graduations | 1/32 in increments |
| Construction | Stainless steel |
| Other checks | Surface porosity comparison and outside misalignment |
Confirm the supplied scale markings when ordering. GAL lists the CAT 5A as an inch model and its specification sheet also references inch or metric measurement. A metric conversion of the range does not establish a separate metric graduation or instrument accuracy.
Inspection and selection
Rest the gauge on sound, clean reference material and lower the pointer gently to the feature being measured. Record the reading and compare it with the applicable inspection criteria. Surface-porosity comparison does not determine internal porosity or remaining wall thickness.
Tell Justram the expected pit depth, opening size, access restrictions and required measurement units. Include any calibration-documentation requirement with your enquiry.
For bevel angles and fillet dimensions, compare the GAL Bridge Cam Gauge. For a shallower weld-profile gauge, see the GAL V-WAC, or browse weld measuring gauges.
