Pipe Welding Spacing Wedge

Pipe welding spacing wedges help adjust the root gap between supported pipe ends during fit-up. Choose D271, D272 or D274 to suit the available access and working length, and check the final gap against the welding procedure.

Adjust the gap during pipe fit-up

These spacing wedges work with suitable chain or cage clamps to help position pipe ends before welding. The wedge section is case hardened, while the upper section is softer. Select the wedge and clamp arrangement for the joint, material and access.

Spacing wedge sizes

ModelLength × width × maximum thickness
D2718 × 1-1/2 × 1/4 in (203 × 38 × 6.4 mm)
D2723-1/2 × 1-1/2 × 1/4 in (89 × 38 × 6.4 mm)
D2744 × 3/4 × 1/4 in (102 × 19 × 6.4 mm)

The 1/4 in dimension is the wedge’s maximum thickness, not a specified weld gap or a load rating. Choose the required root opening from the approved welding procedure and measure the result after adjustment.

Choose for access and joint preparation

Provide the pipe size, joint type, required gap and available working space when enquiring. Keep the pipe sections independently supported and use the wedge within the tool and clamp instructions. Inspect the tool condition before use; a hardened section does not make it immune to damage.
