Argweld weld trailing shields extend inert-gas coverage behind the welding torch while the weld and adjacent metal cool. The ATS series is used for applications involving titanium, zirconium, duplex and stainless steels, and other reactive alloys where the welding procedure requires extended shielding.
Select the shield profile
| Configuration | Workpiece information needed |
|---|---|
| Flat | Sheet or plate, joint position and required coverage |
| External radius | Actual outside diameter of the pipe or vessel |
| Internal radius | Actual inside diameter and available torch clearance |
Justram stocks standard trailing shields from 1 to 12 inches. Specify the actual workpiece dimensions rather than relying on nominal pipe size. Wider or longer shields may be required for a particular travel speed, heat input or automated setup; confirm custom configurations with Justram.
Trailing shields for titanium, zirconium, stainless and duplex welding
Trailing shields provide secondary inert-gas coverage over the weld face and adjacent heat-affected zone while the material cools. They are especially useful where surface oxidation, heat tint or discoloration must be controlled on titanium, zirconium, stainless steel and duplex stainless applications. Select the shield profile and coverage length to suit the joint geometry, heat input, travel speed and welding procedure.
Torch mounting and shielding setup for TIG, plasma and MIG
The universal worm-drive clip mounts around the shielding-gas nozzle on TIG/GTAW, MIG/GMAW and plasma/PAW torches for manual or machine welding. The attachment design supports shield changes and left- or right-hand use. Provide the torch model, nozzle dimensions and mounting arrangement to confirm compatibility with the supplied shield generation.
Gas selection, flow, shield position and travel speed must work together to provide the required protection; a shield alone does not guarantee weld acceptance. Replaceable silicone side gaskets help contain shielding gas at the sides of the shield. The silicone gasket material is rated up to 200°C (392°F); replace any gasket that is heat-damaged before welding.
Trailing shield, root purging and purge chambers
A trailing shield protects the weld face and adjacent heat-affected zone. It does not replace root-side purging when the welding procedure requires protection on the reverse side of the joint. For work that requires the entire component to remain in an inert atmosphere, a purge chamber or enclosure may be more appropriate. Choose the shielding method to match the material, joint design and documented welding procedure.
Custom-order trailing-shield options
For applications that require a different mounting arrangement or shield construction, Justram can quote custom-order external trailing-shield configurations—also called gas drags. Options may include stainless-steel or aluminium shield bodies, diffuser arrangements for controlled gas distribution, replaceable sealing gaskets, and custom torch-holder or support-block geometry to suit a particular torch head, nozzle, pipe diameter, sheet application, or automated setup.
Custom profiles, larger coverage areas, and specialized plasma-welding arrangements can be reviewed by application. Send the material, actual dimensions, welding process, torch details, travel arrangement, and duty-cycle requirements so the appropriate configuration can be confirmed.
Replacement parts
- Argweld replacement silicone gasket — match the shield size and profile.
- ATS-SLA-1 supply line assembly — confirm the mating gas connection.
